Federation Backup
The ability to backup federation members or even better single atomic units is a must when using federation and is not supported at this time

I've found a workable solution by scheduling backpacs exports to run at a specific interval. It's not for everyone, but it works for me. I also use redgate's azure backup service to monitor and alert backup statuses.
