At PDC 2010 Microsoft announced the Extra Small Instance, which will be priced at $0.05 per compute hour in order to make the process of development, testing and trial easier. This will make it affordable for developers interested in running smaller applications on the platform. A beta of this role will be available before the end of 2010.
Please let us know if this addresses your needs for a more cost effective Azure offering.

We announced pricing reductions to SQL Azure last month. In addition to those changes you can specify the max size for a SQL Azure DB using t-SQL. Details at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/windowsazure/archive/2012/02/14/announcing-reduced-pricing-on-sql-azure-and-new-100mb-database-option.aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/ff394109.aspx

Agreed. 1 GB is not enough for most projects. For our company, 2 GB would suffice for one year and we're not willing to pay for a 5 GB Web edition database month after month (at least not in the year to come).

For information about what’s coming from SQL Azure, go to about 38:00 in this presentation from TechEd. http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/NorthAmerica/2011/DBI313

The Database Copy feature in the SU4 really solved most of my problems. Please visit http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff951624.aspx to read about it.
Of course, backing up to a blob storage account is still a must-have.
Thank you for this new feature!

This feature is vital for us. We're trying to move a travel app into Windows Azure and we have lots of providers that authenticate based on IP. Reassigning a new IP to us could take a few days, during which we would basically have to rely on cached data (not an option for so long) or just take down the website. Elastic IPs would be a life-saver and would prevent us from going to Amazon.
